Building Stability through Sustainable Job Creation and Infrastructure Rehabilitation
Throughout Haiti’s turbulent history, many foreign entities have engaged in development efforts that have led to less-than-optimal results. Numerous developmental actors have come and gone, giving hand-outs instead of the hand-up people needed to effect sustainable change on their own. As a result, Haitians tend to approach foreign organizations working in their country with a great deal of skepticism.
Building Stability:
Against this backdrop, in late 2006 CHF began a four-year USAID-funded job creation program in five of Haiti’s most densely populated and volatile areas: Petit Goâve, Port-au-Prince, Saint-Marc, Gonaïves and Cap-Haïtien.
An acronym for the Haitian Creole phrase Konbit Ak Tet Ansanm, which describes the principle of working together to achieve a common goal, KATA is a four-year program building stability and strategic infrastructure investments that are being operated, maintained, and sustained by Haitians.
Drawing on the individual enterprise and creativity that can be seen everyday in the markets and streets, KATA advances stability through the creation of immediate and durable jobs through infrastructure development and maintenance, as well as through workforce development and entrepreneurship programs.
