Small Steps for Big Change
CHF has been working in Latin America for more than 30 years, and is taking advantage of unprecedented recent growth levels to provide low- and moderate-income communities with the skills and resources to carve their niche in the growing economy. Through tangible economic opportunities, we are preventing youth from turning to gangs, creating livelihoods for displaced populations, and providing budding entrepreneurs with the resources to shine.
CHF International began working in Colombia in 2001 to address the immediate needs of displaced families. Our programs quickly expanded to create long-term economic opportunities and community rehabilitation for internally displaced Colombians and vulnerable communities.
Haiti
CHF has been wokring in Haiti since 2006 implementing an USAID-funded job creation program in five of Haiti’s most densely populated and volatile areas: Petit Goâve, Port-au-Prince, Saint-Marc, Gonaïves and Cap-Haïtien. The Konbit Ak Tet Ansanm (KATA) program, which is a Haitian Creole phrase for working together, is creating an enabling environment for Haitians to change their lives through immediate and long-term jobs.
In response to the devastating earthquake, which struck Haiti in January 2010, CHF is implementing projects focusing on major rubble removal, restoring livelihoods through cash-for-work and construction of transitional shelters for those displaced by the disaster.
Honduras
CHF International has been working continuously in Honduras since 1985, implementing a variety of development projects focused on housing, sanitation, disaster mitigation, municipal development, environmental management, agriculture, sustainable tourism and economic development. Our current programs run the gamut from supporting small, rural farmers; engaging unmeployed, urban youth; protecting victims of trafficking; and a nation-wide program that aims to reduce the risk of HIV infection in Honduras through large-scale prevention interventions, which target the general as well as at-risk populations.
Mexico
With the support of the Alcoa Community Foundation, CHF International is implementing the Youth Engagement for Advancing Hope (YEAH) program in Ciudad Juárez. Through YEAH, we are engaging vulnerable youth by providing the promise of long-term job opportunity as an alternative to violence.
In 2007, CHF responded to a 7.9 magnitude earthquake which devastated the rural province of Ica. In the aftermath of the disaster, CHF assisted families that had lost their homes and livelihoods and helped them to regain a sense of normalcy by working collaboratively to build transitional shelters, sanitation facilities and classrooms.
